JNCTN is one of the world's leading SaaS platforms for Digital Identity and Credential Management.

As JNCTN's Design Lead I have been responsible for the Brand and Platform Experience. I have helped JNCTN grow from a start-up with a pilot stage product to an Industry mandated, user-centered, and task oriented SaaS solution ready to provide the benefits of verifiable Identity and credentials to ~68,000 workers and organisations in New Zealand's high-risk industries.

The vision

The vision for JNCTN is as simple as it it is challenging. Sovereign Digital Identity and Credentials for all.

Our early adopters are no less than everyday superheroes, people that work in a range of high-risk industries such as power-generation, forestry, emergency services and law enforcement. For them, having split second trust of who someone is, what they know, if they have permission to be where they are is absolutely critical.

JNCTN provides the very first user interactions of these self-sovereign concepts of owning and managing verifiable credentials for identity, education and training, certifications, memberships, and a virtually unlimited amount of personal information that benefits from the ability to be shared in a secure and verifiable way.

Providing people with sovereign control over their digital self will radically change how we interact with the digital world. With the coming of age of Web3 the benefits of "digital trust" will eventually be available to the world at large. Where we currently operate in a world where the internet is almost inherently distrusted and increasingly fraudulent, verifiable credentials will eventually make sharing personal information as a means to establish trust obsolete.

Achieving design simplicity for a complex credential ecosystem

JNCTN has a complex ecosystem consisting of distinct groups and users that all have specific needs. Some of them are listed below give an example of the different types of users and their needs.

  • Individual JNCTN users require an intuitive tool that provides tangible benefits over manually managing Identity and credentials, such as expiry reminders, and secure sharing with other JNCTN users.
  • Organisations using JNCTN for their workforce require powerful workflows that enable granular control, business logic and integrations. Intuitive and powerful search and filter capabilities, dashboards for specific roles,  live monitoring of locations, analytics and auditing.
  • Training providers require easy ways to maintain their credential catalog, assign credentials on location to any JNCTN user in real-time, integrate into their LMS, and have off-line queuing capabilities when networks are unavailable.
  • Verifiers require clear intuitive workflows to condense the relation between the business logic (rules) and available proof into a simple pass/fail outcome, with pre-determined exemption options.

Some users - such as individuals, might only use JNCTN in a native App environment, where other - like training organisations, might use a combination of native App, Web App, and Web portal. The big challenge at JNCTN was developing a modular platform that could expand or contract its functionality based on user role. This way we could provide a consistent experience that allowed people to 'graduate' through the system with minimum disruptions. I.e. an individual user might be promoted to trainer, or a verifier to an admin.

The right information at the right time

Working closely with our wide range of platform users through workshops, our platform support team, Chief Architect and our talented front and back-end development teams we were able to create a highly contextual experience.

Enough information to make key decisions at a glance, but with more granular control no further then one screen and/or modal away. For individuals using JNCTN day to day it was really as simple as presenting their QR code and receiving a pass or fail result within seconds.

The work

I identified key pain points and bottlenecks in the onboarding experience and increased onboarding completion by 60% while reducing onboarding time by 25%.

Based on workshops and interviews, along with site visits to some of our key organisations to get an understanding of the various user journeys within our credential ecosystem I created automated workflows that allowed 'volume onboarding' at a management level, cutting time for organisational onboarding and paving the way for Industry wide adoption.

With journeys captured in stories and flow-diagrams I looked at how communicated requirements held up against what was technically feasible or if there was opportunity to simplify a process beyond a user's expectation. The goal in translating wireframes to UI was to control cognitive load for organisational credential management and keep JNCTNs interactions transparent with plenty of feedback to assure and empower both first-time and seasoned users at every step.

I also provided JNCTN's brand identity, and designed and developed JNCTNs websites, which you can visit at jnctn.us and jnctn.nz

The future of trust

I have guided the journey from a platform that required our support team to import users, set up locations, and maintain credential catalogs to a mature SaaS platform that allows for flexible onboarding, rule-set building, and event management. It's been tremendously satisfying to work for users that do such trivial work for society themselves, and are grateful for the tangible benefits JNCTN enables.

Although the ultimate vision is still some time away it has helped me tremendously as a designer to have worked on the platform. Empathy, inclusion, and accessibility have been essential to unlocking value for people that work tirelessly to provide utilities and services that society relies on.

We can look forward to eventually doing away with passwords, onboarding, approvals, identity theft, credential fraud, and many inconveniences that we have come to accept as a way of life. And it makes for fantastic UX as it will remove so much of the friction we endure to establish trust.
